Police Lieutenant Arrested For Alleged Drugged Driving – Again

| Sep 17, 2019 | Uncategorized |

When you are on the roadways in and around the Montebello area, you know there are risks. One thing you should never have to worry about it getting struck by an impaired driver. At The Hayes Law Firm, APC, we are here to help if you have been injured by an impaired driver. Today, our car accident attorneys in Montebello want to talk about the recent arrest of a local police lieutenant who is alleged to have been driving while drugged.

What has happened in this surprising case?

We are learning of the arrest of Montebello police Lt. Christopher Cervantes. He was booked on suspicion of misdemeanor DUI after a crash that took place recently at San Bernardino Street and Monte Vista Avenue. The Montclair Police Department made the arrest.

Police say that their officers responded to a non-injury crash between two cars and that they discovered Cervantes appeared to be driving under the influence of a drug.

The Montebello Police Department says that Lt. Cervantes has been placed on administrative leave. This is his third arrest in the last eight years. Cervantes was arrested in 2015 on suspicion of drugged driving. He also has an arrest for public drunkenness and resisting arrest in 2011.

You never know what to expect

The roadways can be unpredictable, but you should not have to worry about a law enforcement officer driving under the influence, especially repeatedly. When we turn to the state’s Office of Traffic Safety, we see that there were more than 273,000 total injuries and 3,602 total fatalities as a result of vehicle accidents.

When we look closer at the numbers, we can see that impaired driving is a serious problem. In 2017, alcohol-impaired drivers were responsible for 31% of the total traffic fatalities in California. We also know that 11% of drivers who were killed and had blood tests had drugs in their system at the time of their death.

In many cases, drivers operate after taking a mix of drugs and alcohol. This creates a deadly situation in the roadways. Impaired driving incidents can lead to serious injuries, including:

  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Bone fractures and dislocations
  • Loss of or damage to a bodily organ
  • Dismemberment or amputation
  • Other injuries that inhibit a person’s daily activities
  • Significant disfigurement
